Boat Description

American Tug 395: The Perfect Forty-Footer for Long-Range Cruising

1. General Information

The American Tug 395 is a versatile, sea-kindly and beautifully finished pilothouse cruiser, built in La Conner, Washington, since 2016. At 12.65 m overall with a 4.04 m beam and a shallow 1.04 m draft, it adds valuable length over the 362 and 365 while staying easy to handle for a couple. This semi-displacement explorer yacht carries a CE Design Category A (Ocean) rating and is ideal for owners planning extended coastal cruising, long weekends and liveaboard seasons.

The standard 380 hp Cummins QSB diesel cruises comfortably at around 14 knots with a top speed close to 18 knots, and a 550 hp option is available for owners who want more pace. Two aluminium fuel tanks totalling 1,514 litres give a range of up to 1,600 nautical miles at economical speeds, supported by 454 litres of fresh water and a 170-litre holding tank. Buyers can choose between one- and two-cabin layouts and two saloon arrangements.

2. Construction and Design

Designed by Lynn Senour, the 395 rides on a semi-displacement hull of solid fibreglass laminate backed by a 10-year limited hull warranty. A composite skeg protects the four-blade bronze propeller and supports the rudder, while dripless shaft seals keep the bilge dry. Inside, sapele panelling and trim, Ultraleather pilothouse seating and 1.96 m of headroom create a warm, welcoming and practical interior. The master cabin features a centre-island queen berth with a cedar-lined locker, and the guest cabin offers a lower double with an upper single.

3. Key Features

Impressive range: 1,514 litres of fuel and an efficient single diesel allow passages of up to 1,600 nautical miles between fuel stops.

Flexible layouts: One- or two-cabin arrangements and a choice of L-shaped or U-shaped saloon seating let owners tailor the boat to how they cruise.

Self-sufficient equipment: A Northern Lights generator, bow and stern thrusters, a stern davit and diesel heating or reverse-cycle air conditioning come as standard.

Shallow 1.04 m draft: Opens up shallow anchorages, rivers and inland waterways that deeper boats must avoid.

Optional flybridge: An available flybridge with stainless arch and upper-deck crane adds outdoor living space and tender handling.

4. Summary

The American Tug 395 is made for cruising couples and small families who want more space and range than a 36-footer without stepping up to a larger, more complex yacht. It suits owners planning long coastal journeys, seasonal liveaboard stays and inland exploration who value efficiency, sea-keeping and easy short-handed handling.
