American Tug 485: Long-Range Pilothouse Comfort Built for Living Aboard
1. General Information
The American Tug 485 is a spacious, seaworthy and thoroughly liveable pilothouse motor yacht from American Tug, in production since 2015. Measuring 14.94 m overall with a generous 4.82 m beam, this semi-displacement explorer yacht stretches the builder's proven tug-style formula, adding roughly 1.7 m of extra saloon and galley length over its 435 sibling. It is aimed squarely at liveaboard couples and long-distance cruisers who want to explore remote coastlines without giving up the comforts of home.
A single Cummins diesel of around 600 hp delivers a relaxed cruising speed of about 15 knots and a top speed near 18 knots, while 2,422 litres of fuel support a range of well over 1,500 nautical miles at economical speeds. Inside, a raised pilothouse, a bright saloon, a full galley with dinette and two en-suite cabins provide comfortable accommodation for four guests.
2. Construction and Design
Built in fibreglass (GRP) on a Lynn Senour-designed hull renowned for its sea-keeping, the 485 combines a solid bottom laminate with vacuum-bagged, cored hull sides above the waterline for added stiffness, insulation and quieter running. A moulded composite skeg protects the propeller and supports the rudder, and the yacht carries CE Design Category A (Ocean) certification. Inside, warm sapele veneers, solid sapele trim and a sapele-and-maple sole create a classic yacht ambience, while large opening windows, LED lighting and well-planned storage keep the living spaces bright, airy and practical for extended periods aboard.
3. Key Features
Long-range capability: 2,422 litres of fuel and an efficient single-diesel installation give the 485 a cruising range beyond 1,500 nautical miles, ideal for coastal passages and remote anchorages.
Commanding pilothouse: A centre helm chair, recessed electronics console, companion seating with table and opening windows make long watches comfortable and sociable.
Liveaboard-ready accommodation: An island queen master cabin, a guest cabin with optional upper bunk, two heads with separate shower stalls and a stacked washer-dryer support life on board for weeks at a time.
Effortless manoeuvring: Variable-speed bow and stern thrusters, hydraulic steering and electronic engine controls let a couple handle her confidently in tight marinas.
Self-sufficient systems: A sound-shielded generator, a large AGM house battery bank with inverter-charger and diesel heating or air conditioning keep the yacht comfortable away from shore power.
4. Summary
The American Tug 485 is made for experienced owners, often couples, who plan to spend long seasons aboard and travel far beyond their home waters. It suits buyers moving up from a smaller trawler or sailing yacht who value range, sea-kindliness, fuel efficiency and easy short-handed handling over outright speed. For full-time liveaboards, expedition cruisers and anyone seeking a comfortable, go-anywhere pilothouse yacht, the 485 offers an exceptionally well-rounded package.
