Boat Description
Axis A20: Big Wakes in a Garage-Friendly Package
1. General Information
The Axis A20 is the compact, accessible entry point into the Axis Wake Research range, the value-focused sister brand of Malibu Boats. At 6.10 m overall with a 2.49 m beam and seating for 11, this nimble ski and wakeboard boat borrows the same wake-shaping technology found on far larger towboats and packs it into a hull small enough to fit in many standard residential garages.
It is the ideal choice for young families, first-time wake boat owners and riders who like to trailer between different lakes. As a dedicated day boat there is no cabin; instead the open bow and roomy main cockpit are given over to wraparound lounge seating, board storage and space for friends. A 159 L fuel tank comfortably covers a full day of wakeboarding, wakesurfing and tubing on inland waters, while the boat remains genuinely fun to drive as well as to ride behind.
2. Construction and Design
The A20 is built in fibreglass around the Wake Plus modified-vee hull, designed to sit deeper in the water at low towing speeds to maximise displacement. With a dry weight of around 1,590 kg, it relies on up to 1,728 kg of factory water ballast, held in hard tanks and plug-and-play bags in the bow and stern lockers, to build wakes and surf waves that belie its modest length. The optional Power Wedge III hydrofoil adds the equivalent of roughly 680 kg more and helps the boat plane off quickly.
Inside, the layout favours comfort and sociability: a playpen-style bow cockpit, generous wraparound seating, soft-grip flooring and an available rear-facing sliding Skybox seat that lets guests watch the rider. Ballast, Surf Gate and Power Wedge controls sit on simple dash switches, so dialling in a wave needs no complicated menus, and a Wet Sounds audio package keeps the soundtrack going.
3. Key Features
Malibu Monsoon M5Di power: A direct-injection gasoline inboard of around 360 hp drives through a V-drive, delivering strong low-down torque to pull riders out of the water with ease.
Surf Gate wave shaping: Malibu's patented system lets riders switch the surf wave from one side of the boat to the other at the push of a button.
Big ballast in a small hull: Up to 1,728 kg of factory water ballast, plus the optional Power Wedge III, produces clean, powerful wakes and surfable waves.
AW20 folding tower: The tower raises the tow point for better air and can be folded by one person, with an optional quick-release latch and board racks.
Easy to tow and store: Compact dimensions make the A20 simple to trailer to new lakes and to keep at home between outings.
4. Summary
The Axis A20 is aimed at buyers who want genuine wakeboard and wakesurf performance without the size, storage headaches or price of a full-size towboat. It suits families stepping into watersports, couples and small groups of friends, and anyone who tows the boat to different lakes or keeps it in a garage. With Malibu engineering, simple push-button wave controls and room for 11, it is a versatile, value-packed first step into serious wake boating.
