Boat Description
Axis A22: The Perfectly Sized Wake and Surf All-Rounder
1. General Information
The Axis A22 has long been one of the most popular models from Axis Wake Research, the value-driven sister brand of Malibu Boats. Measuring 6.68 m at the hull (8.15 m including the swim platform) with a generous 2.59 m beam, it strikes a clever balance: big enough to throw a serious wakeboard wake and a long, clean surf wave, yet compact enough to stay nimble, easy to drive and simple to tow.
With seating for up to 15, it suits active families and groups of friends who want one boat for wakesurfing, wakeboarding, tubing and relaxed lake days. As a dedicated open day boat there is no cabin; the space is given over to a pickle-fork bow lounge, a roomy main cockpit and ample storage for boards and gear, while the 182 L fuel tank comfortably covers a long day of towing on inland waters.
2. Construction and Design
The A22 is built in fibreglass on the Wake Plus modified-vee hull, designed specifically for boarding: it sits deeper in the water at low speeds to displace more water and build a bigger wake. Weighing around 2,040 kg, it carries 408 kg of standard water ballast in the Wakebox hard-tank system, expandable to around 1,867 kg with plug-and-play bags, while the available Power Wedge III hydrofoil lets riders fine-tune wake shape and size.
The layout is all about the crew. A wraparound bow lounge in the pickle-fork bow, a walk-through windscreen, a swivelling helm seat with flip-up bolster and the rear-facing sliding Skybox seat keep everyone comfortable and close to the action. A clean, minimalist dash with a central touch screen puts ballast, Surf Gate and speed control within easy reach, and soft-grip flooring and zoned audio complete a practical, well-finished interior.
3. Key Features
Malibu Monsoon power: The direct-injection Monsoon M5Di inboard of around 360 hp drives through a V-drive, with the larger M6Di available for even more torque under a full load of ballast.
Surf Gate: High-speed hydraulic gates turn the wake into a customisable surf wave and switch it from side to side at the push of a button.
Wake Plus hull and Power Wedge III: The displacement-focused hull and adjustable hydrofoil let every rider dial in a wake that suits their ability.
Room for 15: The pickle-fork bow and wraparound seating maximise usable space for a big crew without stretching the boat's length.
AW20 tower: An easy-to-operate folding tower raises the tow point, with options including quad board racks and a quick-release latch.
4. Summary
The Axis A22 is aimed at buyers who want proper big-boat wakes and surf waves in a size that is still manageable to drive, launch and store. It suits families and groups of friends who ride regularly and need seating for a crowd, as well as owners stepping up from a 20-footer. With Malibu engineering, push-button Surf Gate and a strong-value price point, it remains one of the most versatile all-round wake boats in its class.
