Boat Description
Back Cove 30: Downeast Grace, Effortless Cruising
1. General Information
The Back Cove 30 is a refined, single-engine Downeast cruiser built in Rockland, Maine, and introduced in 2010. Measuring 10.41 m overall with a 3.43 m beam and a shallow 0.81 m draft, this elegant and easy-handling motor boat is made for relaxed day trips and comfortable weekends afloat for couples and small families. Her sheltered hardtop helm deck seats around six guests on raised settees and a mate's seat, so everyone enjoys the view, while the aft cockpit adds fixed seating for lounging in the sun.
Living space is cleverly arranged: a galley aft with solid-surface counter, stove, microwave and fridge, a moulded head compartment with electric toilet and shower, and a cosy V-berth cabin forward that converts into a dinette around an inlaid cherry table. With 620 L of fuel and an efficient diesel engine, she cruises quietly at around 20 knots and offers a practical coastal range.
2. Construction and Design
Back Cove builds the 30 using vacuum resin infusion, producing a strong yet lighter fibreglass hull with lower emissions during construction. The deep-vee hull with downturned forward chines climbs onto the plane with minimal bow rise, secondary spray rails keep the ride dry, and a 16-degree deadrise aft combined with a shallow propeller pocket reduces draft and running angle. Her spoon bow, gentle tumblehome and reverse transom pay tribute to classic Maine lobster boats.
Inside, warm American cherry joinery, LED lighting, opening portlights and an overhead hatch create a bright, welcoming cabin with generous storage. On deck, wide side decks, high perimeter rails and aggressive non-skid make moving around safe and confident in any conditions.
3. Key Features
Efficient single diesel: the standard diesel of around 315–320 hp delivers a quiet 20-knot cruise, while optional engines raise cruising speeds into the mid-twenties.
Standard bow thruster: precise, stress-free docking that suits owner-operators and short-handed crews.
Convertible helm deck: the port settee and mate's seat form an L-shaped lounge at anchor and convert into an extra berth at night.
Resin-infused deep-vee hull: stronger, lighter construction that gives a dry, stable and agile ride.
Swim platform and flush transom door: easy boarding from the water and the largest possible cockpit sole.
4. Summary
The Back Cove 30 suits couples and experienced owners, including those moving up from smaller boats, who value timeless Downeast styling, simple single-engine handling and economical cruising. She is ideal for buyers seeking a well-built, easy-to-maintain weekender for coastal day trips, picnic runs and short cruises, with genuine comfort for two and room for occasional guests.
