Boat Description
Back Cove 34O: Downeast Style, Outboard Speed
1. General Information
The award-winning Back Cove 34O, introduced in 2018 as the yard's first outboard-powered model, blends classic Downeast good looks with the speed, simplicity and space efficiency of modern outboards. Measuring 12.06 m overall including engines, with a 3.63 m beam and a shallow 0.64 m hull draft, she is ideal for couples and small families who want to cover ground quickly and explore shallow coves. Twin Mercury V8 Verado 300 hp outboards are standard, giving a relaxed 30-knot cruise and a top speed of around 37 knots, while optional twin V10 400 hp engines push her beyond 44 knots.
The hardtop helm deck is the social heart of the boat, with an on-deck galley, 360-degree visibility, large opening side windows and a sliding mate's seat that forms a U-shaped settee around the dinette. Below, a cabin with an island berth, a split head and shower and clever storage make overnight stays genuinely comfortable. A 916 L petrol tank supports long days on the water.
2. Construction and Design
Designed in-house under Kevin Burns, the 34O rides on Back Cove's proprietary TRELIS (Trailing Edge Lifting Surface) modified-V planing hull, developed with computational fluid dynamics to get on plane quickly and run efficiently. The hull is vacuum resin infused with foam cores in the bottom and topsides, and the deck uses a resin-infused balsa-cored sandwich for strength and stiffness at low weight.
Inside, varnished cherry joinery, cherry hull ceilings and padded headliners give a warm, crafted feel, while swim steps either side of the engines and a convertible transom seat make the cockpit practical for swimming and entertaining.
3. Key Features
TRELIS hull: quick planing and an efficient 30-knot cruise extend range while saving fuel.
Twin outboard power: Mercury Verado engines free up interior space and make maintenance straightforward.
On-deck galley: the cook stays part of the conversation on the bright helm deck.
Convertible seating: a sliding mate's seat and a convertible transom seat adapt the boat for cruising or entertaining.
Split head and shower: a separate shower compartment adds comfort rarely found at this size.
4. Summary
The Back Cove 34O suits couples and owners who want a stylish, efficient weekender with real pace. She appeals to buyers who prefer the simplicity of outboards, enjoy fast day trips and short coastal cruises, and value Downeast craftsmanship in a manageable, easy-to-handle package.
