Kraken 44: Dibley-Designed Bluewater Cruiser Built Around Zero-Compromise Safety
1. General Information
The Kraken 44 is the entry point into Kraken Yachts' bluewater cruising range, designed by New Zealand naval architect Kevin Dibley to bring the same safety-first philosophy found in Kraken's larger 50, 58 and 66-foot yachts into a size a couple or solo sailor can manage comfortably. Built around a single helm and centre cockpit, she is aimed squarely at long-range, short-handed ocean passage-making rather than coastal weekending, though Kraken says she can carry four for offshore passages.
Her heavy-displacement hull is designed to ride through big seas rather than slam over them, trading outright speed for the steady, predictable motion long-distance cruisers value on a multi-week passage. A single Yanmar diesel, with an optional larger Yanmar or Kraken's own hybrid electric drive, and a triple fuel-polishing system reduce the risk of contaminated diesel stopping the engine mid-passage, while 602 litres of fuel and 500 litres of water support genuine ocean-crossing autonomy.
2. Construction and Design
The defining feature of every Kraken, the 44 included, is her Zero Keel construction: the ballast is cast directly into the hull structure rather than bolted on, removing the single failure point, keel-bolt fatigue or a lost keel after grounding, that worries most bluewater sailors. She pairs this with Kraken's Alpha Rudder system, a skeg-hung rudder whose bearings can be changed with the boat still afloat, a real advantage given how limited haulout access can be in the Pacific or Indonesia.
On deck, a Solent rig carries two headsails on their own removable stays, a larger reacher for light airs and a smaller self-tacking jib for upwind work or heavier conditions, letting the crew change sail area without leaving the cockpit. Kevin Dibley's design brief traces back over a decade to conversations with Kraken founder Dick Beaumont, whose own ocean-sailing experience shaped the brand's engineering priorities from the outset.
