<p>The Hallberg-Rassy 46 was built in 132 units between 1995 and 2005. Production numbers were shared between the 45 and the 46, although there were different moulds. Hull numbers 1-69 plus Number 83 are Hallberg-Rassy 45s, and 70-202, except No 83, were Hallberg-Rassy 46s.</p><p>The Hallberg-Rassy 46 is based on the 45 but extensively upgraded. There are new plugs and moulds for both hull and deck. The hull of the 46&nbsp; is 44 cm wider at the transom, fading out to zero at the widest point. The freeboard is 10 cm higher at the transom, fading out to zero at the stem. This gives more space below decks. The cockpit is upgraded on the 46, with more seating space, eventhough the length is the same. The 46 has a rubbing strake below the blue stripe on the hull, which is not the case with the 45. The genoa sheet system, the portlights, the windshileld and the aft deck lockers were improved. The number of opening portlights were upgraded from 8 to 13. The 46 was offered both with a deep draft and a shallow draft keel version, the 45 was only built with the shallow draft. The rudder design was renewed on the 46, and the steering system was upgraded from wire to rod links with cardan connection and progressive purchase. The steering pedestal top was improved on the 46, allowing space for more buttons and displays.</p><p>Also the interior layout is improved on the 46, particularly visible in the galley and the new forward layout with heads with separate hsower to sb, twin bunks cabin to port side and a separate passage to the v cabin in front, without having to walk through another cabin for access. The headroom in the saloon is improved from 1.94 to 1.98 m, the walk though to the aft cabin increased in headroom from 1.91 to 1.94, at the same it got 8 cm wider, the aft cabin headroom increased from 1.82 to 1.88, the aft heads from 1.76 to 1.91, the aft shower from 1.81 to 1.87 m.</p><p>Short-handed sailing is easy in this attractive Frers-designed cruiser. She is both a fairly good performer and seakindly. It is a boat made to go around the world or cruise local waters.</p>

The chainplates are integrated into the hull structure and are strong enough that the whole weight of the boat can be lifted on them.</p>

The joinery is precise, the wood grains are quite attractive, and little touches like airlifts on lockers abound.</p><p>On a more basic, structural level, Dufour hulls are made of vacuum-bagged fiberglass, and the decks are laminated with a foam core. I found the plumbing throughout to be neat, bundled and labeled, and all hoses and connections to the metal sea cocks double-clamped and secure. Wiring harnesses behind the panel are similarly neat, although all the positive leads are red, so a technician will need to have diagrams of the connector pin outs in order to do any troubleshooting—not a good thing. Color-coded wires for specific circuits are better.</p><p>It is easy to move about on deck and to step up onto the cabintop aboard the Dufour 360. The boom is also low enough for a person of normal height to reach, an important feature that buyers may overlook until it comes time try to adjust something up there. Using teak for the toerail is a nice touch, and the amount of teak is small enough that nobody will be offended if you let it turn gray with age rather than keep it varnished. The anchor lives on a short bowsprit that can also be used to secure the tack of an A-sail, a setup that will be handy for cruising.</p><p>Beyond that, the changes from the Dufour 350 to the 360 include a new deck mold that incorporates a fixed port in the front of the cabinhouse, new steering pedestals and a grill at the aft end of the cockpit. The new stern configuration might sound like a gimmick, but it’s actually a very cool idea, as the transom platform drops down to perform double duty as both a swim step and the floor of a cooking area for working at the built-in grill and counter top.</p>
