Catalac Catamarans: a name that resonates with durability and innovation in the world of sailing. Founded by Tom Lack in Christchurch, Dorset, Catalac set the benchmark for sailing catamarans with its sturdy construction and unique design. Although Catalac ceased production in 1986, the Catalac 9M stands as a testament to the brand's enduring appeal, so much so that it saw an American revival as the Catalac 900.
Catalac catamarans, with their pronounced rocker, wide-flaring chines, and solid foredeck, offered remarkable maneuverability and stability. The 9M model’s underwater hull profile showcased Catalac's dedication to a seagoing experience, as did their commitment to robust grp (glass-reinforced plastic) construction and practical sail plans with masthead Bermuda sloops.
The Catalac 9M was admired for its staggered sheerline, which improved dockside access, an aspect less pronounced in the 8M, 10M, and 12M models. The roomy accommodations aboard the Catalac catamarans were a joy for sailors, with ample living space fortified by thoughtful layouts, galley-below designs, and cozy berths.
With stellar reviews from yachting experts and a strong record of safety—no known incidents of pitchpoling or capsizing—Catalac catamarans have earned their place in maritime history as exceptional, family-friendly vessels.
