Crafting the Future on the Tides of Tradition: Van Dam Custom Wooden Boats

From a dream solidified in the 1970s to a beacon of excellence in the custom wooden boat industry, Van Dam Custom Boats traces its legacy to the passion and dedication of newly-weds Jean and Steve Van Dam. Their journey, initially a brief stop en route to the east coast, evolved into a cornerstone of nautical craftsmanship through the mentor ship of Vic Carpenter in Canada. Their move to Harbor Springs in 1975 marked the beginning of a tradition that, decades later, continues to set standards in wooden boat building.

A Voyage through Time: The Evolution of Craft

Fast forward to the 1980s, a pivotal era of growth both for the Van Dam family and their burgeoning venture. This decade witnessed the expansion of the Van Dam portfolio to include not just sailboats inspired by naval architect Fred Ford’s designs but also the introduction of their first power boat, Flicker, expanding the horizons of their craftsmanship.

The 1990s heralded Van Dam’s expansion, with the acquisition of waterfront property in Boyne City, Michigan, laying the groundwork for Van Dam Marine Company. This period not only showcased their adeptness at handling exotic speed boats like the Alpha Z but also underscored their commitment to unparalleled quality.

Into the 2000s, Van Dam solidified its reputation with a focus on a variety of designs and functionalities, blending tradition with innovation. The transition into the 2010s under the leadership of Ben Van Dam, marked by strategic expansions and the continuation of the Van Dam legacy into new ventures, all while maintaining an unwavering standard of quality.

Present and Future Horizons

Today, Van Dam Custom Boats continues to thrive, underpinned by a team dedicated to pushing the boundaries of wooden boat craftsmanship. With Erika Van Dam joining as Vice President, the company sails ahead into strategic development, poised to stun enthusiasts with intricately detailed cruisers showcasing cutting-edge technology and exceptional performance.
