Boat Description

Balance 464 CC: A Carbon-Core Performance Catamaran with Optional Hybrid Drive

1. General Information

The Balance 464 CC is the entry point into Balance Catamarans' current range, sharing much of its tooling with the highly successful 442 but stretched by around 80cm of extra hull length and given a taller mast and larger sail plan for genuinely improved performance. She is aimed at sailors who want a fast, capable cruising catamaran without stepping up to Balance's larger 502 CC, and who value carbon construction and daggerboard performance over the interior volume that heavier production catamarans prioritise.

The CC in her name stands for Carbon Core, referring to a fully carbon-fibre central structure, bulkheads, primary beams, chainplates, cabin soles, daggerboards, trunks and rudders, that keeps weight down without sacrificing stiffness. She is offered with conventional twin diesel engines or as the VersaDrive Hybrid, pairing dual 45hp Yanmar diesels with Integrel's E-Drive system for genuine diesel-electric propulsion.

2. Construction and Design

Naval architect Anton du Toit and Balance president Philip Berman spent over a year developing the 464 CC and her larger 502 CC sister, with much of that time going into optimising weight distribution around the new hybrid propulsion system. The carbon-core structure is not limited to the primary grid: daggerboards, rudder blades and cabin soles are also full carbon construction, a level of lightweight engineering usually reserved for outright performance catamarans rather than dual-purpose cruisers.

In the VersaDrive Hybrid configuration, the Integrel E-Drive system boosts the standard twin 45hp Yanmar diesels to deliver up to 30kW of charging output or 40hp of electric propulsion from a 36kW, 48-volt lithium battery bank, chargeable at up to 15kW per engine. Up to 3,000 watts of solar panels can be added on top, reducing fossil fuel consumption by as much as 25% and removing the need for a separate generator.

3. Key Features

Full Carbon-Core Structure – Bulkheads, primary beams, chainplates, cabin soles, daggerboards and rudders are all carbon construction, delivering genuine weight savings over conventional catamaran building.

Taller Rig and Larger Sail Plan – An increased mast height over previous Balance models translates directly into more sail area and greater performance potential.

Optional VersaDrive Hybrid Propulsion – Integrel's E-Drive system pairs twin 45hp Yanmar diesels with a 36kW lithium battery bank for genuine diesel-electric cruising.

Fast Battery Charging – Up to 15kW of charging per engine keeps the hybrid system's battery bank topped up without dedicated generator running time.

Solar-Ready for Off-Grid Cruising – Up to 3,000 watts of solar capacity, paired with the hybrid drivetrain, can cut fossil fuel consumption by around 25%.

4. Summary

The Balance 464 CC suits sailors who want genuine performance-catamaran engineering, daggerboards, carbon construction, a taller rig, in a size that is manageable as an entry point into the Balance range rather than a step up to the flagship 502 CC. She will appeal particularly to owners drawn to the VersaDrive Hybrid option, who want to reduce fuel consumption and generator dependence on longer cruises without giving up the reassurance of conventional diesel power. Built on the proven tooling of the popular 442 but meaningfully larger and faster, the 464 CC represents Balance's continued focus on the performance-cruising segment of the catamaran market.
